The University of Scranton is a private Jesuit university in Scranton, Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1888 by William O'Hara, the first Bishop of Scranton, as St. Thomas College. In 1938, the college was elevated to university status and took the name The University of Scranton.

Bachelor of International Business

International business is an interdisciplinary program, drawing on all areas of business, with a particular focus on international trade, multinational corporations, and foreign direct investment. We provide broadly-educated, flexible graduates with a sound core of the functional areas of business and a passion for understanding the world.

Why is International Business in demand?

  • Employers in both the public and private sectors are increasingly valuing candidates who have a global mindset and cross-cultural sensitivities.
  • Business today is global; more than a quarter of everything made or grown in the world crosses international borders.
  • Approximately 30% of the top 700 CEO’s in the USA have had international experience.

Curriculum

With an international business major, students gain an understanding of the complex forces shaping business today.

We offer you an interdisciplinary approach drawing on all the functional areas of business. Courses include:

  • Environment of International Business
  • International Accounting
  • International Finance
  • International Economics
  • International Management
  • International Marketing

Courses that focus on business in one area of the world include:

  • European Business
  • Business in China
  • East Asian Trade and Investment
  • Latin American Business

There is an opportunity to specialize in a region of interest through our Asian Studies or Latin American Studies concentration. There is also a foreign language requirement and, for most students, a built-in minor. You can chose from:

  • German
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Portuguese
  • Spanish
  • Russian

A study abroad experience is strongly encouraged. More than 85% of international business graduates study in a foreign country. IB majors have studied in 25 different countries on all six continents in the last decade. Many students have chosen: Argentina, China, France, Italy, Japan and Spain, among others.

Research

One of the many great reasons to choose The University of Scranton is the opportunity to engage in research, often funded by the President’s Fellowships for Summer Research. Mark Grambo ’12 and Jan Wessel ’14 are two international business majors who were awarded these fellowships. Grambo studied ecotourism, ethics and “greenwashing” and presented his research at the International Academy of Business and Public Affairs Disciplines Conference in Orlando, Florida. Meanwhile, Wessel studied sustainability in China’s automobile industry, the world’s largest auto market. You can read more about their research here

The University of Scranton takes a holistic approach to reviewing its applicants. We consider many factors including coursework, standardized test scores, letters of recommendation, leadership, community service and extracurricular activities.

Our most competitive majors include the sciences and health sciences, especially Nursing, Occupational Therapy and our Doctor of Physical Therapy program (guaranteed seat). We strongly encourage applicants to apply Early Action (non-binding) for these programs.

if applicable – International applicants must submit proof of English proficiency. This proof can be met by submitting either the TOEFL, IELTS, SAT or ACT. Our minimum acceptable TOEFL is an 80ibt and the minimum acceptable IELTS is a 6.5 overall band score.

November 15: Early Action Deadline - Early Action is a non-binding program for students who have a strong desire to attend The University of Scranton. We will mail Early Action admission decisions on December 15.

December 15: Regular Decision Application Review Begins - Regular Decision applications will be reviewed after Early Action candidates have been notified. Once the completed application is received, it can take four to six weeks to process. Applicants will be notified on a rolling basis after December 15.

May 1: National Candidates Reply Date - Admitted applicants must reserve their place in the fall class by this date. This is accomplished by submitting a deposit online through your status page; instructions are included in your acceptance packet.
