The University of Scranton is a private Jesuit university in Scranton, Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1888 by William O'Hara, the first Bishop of Scranton, as St. Thomas College. In 1938, the college was elevated to university status and took the name The University of Scranton.

Bachelor of Science in Mathematics

Why Mathematics is in Demand:

  • Mathematics is one of the ten highest paying majors according to the National Bureau for Economic Research.
  • Certified math teachers are in high demand. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics reports that 30 percent of U.S. teachers lack math knowledge, creating an increased need for instructors with bachelor's degrees.
  • Applying mathematics leads to new ideas and discovery. In some way, shape or form, math is everywhere.
  • Logic, creativity, curiosity and critical thinking are necessary in any career. 

What We Do:

Encourage students to channel their love of logic, patterns and problem-solving to make a difference in the world around them. Professors in the Mathematics Department won’t simply tell students an answer – they help students discover how to find one themselves. Our classrooms, Math Lab and Math Project Room are hubs for learning, discussion, invention and creativity.

Programs:

The mathematics department offers a B.S. in Mathematics and a B.S. in Mathematical Sciences, with tracks in Actuarial Science, Biological Sciences, Computer & Information Science, Data Science, and Physical Sciences. These programs share a number of courses in the first and second year adding flexibility to deciding which path to pursue. November 15: Early Action Deadline - Early Action is a non-binding program for students who have a strong desire to attend The University of Scranton. We will mail Early Action admission decisions on December 15.

December 15: Regular Decision Application Review Begins - Regular Decision applications will be reviewed after Early Action candidates have been notified. Once the completed application is received, it can take four to six weeks to process. Applicants will be notified on a rolling basis after December 15.

May 1: National Candidates Reply Date - Admitted applicants must reserve their place in the fall class by this date. This is accomplished by submitting a deposit online through your status page; instructions are included in your acceptance packet.
