Master of Science in Actuarial Science

Actuaries use statistical and data science tools to analyze and plan for future financial situations. The MS program in Actuarial Science is designed to train students in the background knowledge necessary to become an actuary.

Risk analysts and actuaries are expected to earn professional designation from either the Society of Actuaries (life and health insurance) or the Casualty Actuarial Society (property and casualty insurance). These societies administer a series of examinations that lead to the risk analyst designation, or for actuaries, first to the designation of associate and then to fellow. The initial exams are the same for both societies. The courses required for the MS in Actuarial Science will aid the student in preparing for the first four of the professional societies' examinations and will also satisfy their Validation by Educational Experience (VEE) requirements in economics,  corporate finance, and mathematical statistics.

Actuarial Science involves the application of probability theory and risk management to the areas of life and health insurance, property and casualty insurance, pension plans, and other employee benefit plans. Risk analysts and actuaries, who evaluate the long-term financial impact of these plans on both the issuing company and the purchaser or beneficiary of the plan, are employed by insurance companies, consulting firms, large corporations, and governmental agencies. The Masters in Actuarial Science emphasizes the mathematical theory that underlies risk evaluation.

The program accepts properly prepared students who wish to attend on either a part- or full-time basis. Many courses are offered in the evenings to accommodate students who are employed during the day.

FINANCIAL AND IMMIGRATION INFORMATION

International students who wish to study as an F-1 Student must submit the following additional documents in order to receive a Form I-20:

  • A photocopy of their passport information page
  • Evidence of funds to cover the first year’s tuition, fees, housing and living expenses (books, supplies, insurance, personal items) in the form of bank statements or a letter from the bank
  • Affidavit of Support form (if the finances you will be using belong to a parent or other relative)
  • A $500 non-refundable deposit. This deposit will be applied directly to your tuition upon enrollment.

Up-to-date tuition and fee information can be found on our website. All other living expenses (housing, books, supplies, insurance, personal items) are estimated at $17,000 per year. If the student will have a financial sponsor, the student's sponsor should complete the Affidavit of Support and submit it with an official bank statement.

If you have received a scholarship, you may use this to show part of your funding. To learn more about Roosevelt scholarship opportunities, please visit our scholarship page.

Students will not receive their I-20 until they have paid their $500 non-refundable deposit. Students should expect to receive their I-20 digitally within one week after they submit all required documents and pay their non-refundable deposit.

Do I have to submit my bank statements with my application?

We encourage you to submit all documents when you apply. However, we will review you application without your financial and immigration documents. These documents are required to issue your Form I-20 if you are admitted; they are not required to make an admission decision.

I'm not an F-1 student, do I need to submit financial and immigration documents?

All international students should show proof of their current status in the U.S. We use this information to show why you did not need F-1 student status. If you are in the U.S. in a different immigration status, you are not required to show funding. If you want to change your status, you must show funding.
