Interdisciplinary students are exposed to the fundamentals of science and engineering, while also developing their skills as leaders, systems thinkers, and engineering designers through engineering leadership and business courses as well as a project-based course sequence.  Rather than focusing exclusively on an existing Engineering subfield such as Biomedical, Civil, Environmental, Electrical, Computer, or Mechanical Engineering, this is a unique interdisciplinary program with broad flexibility and a student-guided focus. The core vision of the program’s design is to provide a customizable degree for students, so they may optimize their opportunities to enter the workforce, including emergent entrepreneurial businesses. The curriculum aims to develop students into engineering leaders who utilize a systems-perspective to collaborate across disciplines and design innovative, human-centered solutions to local, national, and global challenges. It combines a core encompassing math, sciences, business, communication, and engineering courses from all disciplines along with a secondary field that could include traditional existing engineering areas, or focus on grand challenges such as personalized learning, cybersecurity, and water accessibility.

Interested applicants can apply to FIU through Common App. If you have applied through Common App, you should not submit a separate application through FIU's application portal.

 

Applicants will be required to pay a $30 USD application fee or use an SAT/ACT fee waiver. If you are using an SAT/ACT fee waiver please indicate that on the Common App when submitting your application.

 

Demonstrate English-language proficiency

Applicants from non-English speaking countries, including internationally educated domestic students, must demonstrate proficiency in English.

 

For direct admission to FIU, international first time in college students are not required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores.

 

Students are required to meet the Florida Board of Governors requirements for the college readiness largely determined by their SAT or ACT sub-section scores in Verbal/Reading and English sections. If students meet these sub-section scores and have the appropriate GPA, they are academically qualified for admission to FIU.

Early Fall Direct

Early Fall Direct is a pathway for students who elect to begin in June for the Summer term. We also offer this pathway to applicants who applied for the Fall, but whose academic profile benefits from an earlier start to their college career.

 

Beginning in the Early Fall Direct term allows students to transition to FIU before the rush of the Fall term. All students are required to take 9 Summer credits to graduate from FIU. Credits taken during Early Fall Direct pathway will count towards that quota.

Fall Direct

Fall Direct is a pathway for students who start classes during the Fall term, in August. This pathway has the highest academic criteria for admission. Students admitted to the Fall term by November 1st with qualifying criteria are considered for our Admissions Merit-Based (Premiere) Scholarships.

 

The Fall term is the most traditional start term at FIU, and it is when most of our major sports and student-run events occur on campus.

Spring Direct

The Spring Direct pathway starts in January, and is considered to be the most flexible of our pathways to get admitted in. Many students opt for Spring Direct if they need more time to move to Miami from out of town, finish up coursework at their current school, or prepare finances.
