The University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass Amherst) is a public land-grant research university in Amherst, Massachusetts. It is the flagship campus of the University of Massachusetts system, and was founded in 1863 as the Massachusetts Agricultural College. It is also a member of the Five College Consortium, along with four other colleges in the Pioneer Valley.

Biomedical engineering is a rapidly growing and highly innovative field that allows you to shape the future of human health and medicine.

At UMass Amherst, you'll learn to combine engineering with biology and medicine to create diagnostic and therapeutic tools; improve health care; and detect, repair, and treat diseases. You will conduct exciting research and development work even as an undergraduate, exploring areas from cutting-edge prosthetics and regenerative tissue growth to diagnostic devices and optical imaging.

Through courses and labs, you'll build foundational skills in areas such as biomaterials and tissue engineering, ethics, and computational tools. You can specialize your degree by choosing electives in areas ranging from immunology to biorobotics.

Our graduates find success in medical equipment design and manufacturing, research and development services, pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing, and a variety of other careers.

Thank you for your interest in UMass Amherst. Admission to the first-year class is selective and is contingent upon successful completion of required high school courses at a level consistent with the university’s admissions standards. When you apply, we consider everything we learn about you from your application and decisions are never based on any single factor. You can help us get to know you by submitting the required items outlined below. We use a holistic review process to select students who will benefit from the UMass Amherst academic environment and enrich the entire student body.

UMass Amherst seeks to admit students who will contribute fully to campus life, inside and outside the classroom. Therefore, all non-native speakers of English must demonstrate English language proficiency. There are several ways to satisfy the requirement

Cambridge English: B2 First, C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency: minimum combined score of 176 with no sub score lower than 169.

English Education: Completion of entire secondary education (four years) at a high school where English is the primary language of instruction and a British or American curriculum is followed. (This waiver is not automatic and at the discretion of the Director.)

Unscripted interview: While not required for admission, all international students may choose to submit a third-party unscripted interview.  If you choose to submit an interview, companies that provide this service include InitialView.

We do not accept results from the IELTS Indicator, the TOEFL ITP Plus for China, TOEFL Essentials, or the PTE Academic Online.

Please note that we do not superscore any English proficiency tests (e.g., we do not accept TOEFL MyBest scores). All core reports must be no older than two years at the time of application and must be sent directly to Undergraduate Admissions from the testing service.
