The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is a public research university in Birmingham, Alabama. Founded in 1969 and part of the University of Alabama System, UAB has grown to be the state's largest employer, with more than 24,200 faculty and staff and over 53,000 jobs at the university. The university is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity".[7] UAB offers 140 programs of study in 12 academic divisions leading to bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and professional degrees.[8] In the fall of 2020, UAB enrolled 22,563 students from more than 110 countries.[9] The UAB Health System, one of the largest academic medical centers in the United States, is affiliated with UAB. The UAB athletic teams known as the Blazers compete in 18 varsity-level sports in the NCAA Division 1 - American Athletic Conference.[10] Its official varsity colors are green and gold.[11] The Blazers have won 11 conference championships to date.

About the Course

When health care and engineering come together, a whole new world of medical treatment possibilities opens up. Graduates of our biomedical engineering program create unique innovations in health-care delivery, medical devices, biomedical imaging, instrumentation, and beyond.

To prepare you for your career or a doctoral program, we want research to be a big part of your education. That's why your courses will be selected in consultation with a thesis advisor and approved by the biomedical engineering graduate program committee. As part of your curriculum, you'll learn about topics such as engineering analysis, statistical methods, and quantitative physiology, while you research areas like biomedical imaging, biomedical implants and devices, cardiac electrophysiology, multi-scale computational modeling, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. In the end, you'll present your research at a scientific or technical conference and publish at least one peer-reviewed manuscript.

Admission Requirements

International students from non-English speaking countries are required to submit English proficiency scores (TOEFL/IELTS/PTEA) that meet the Graduate School's minimum score requirements.

*NOTE: UAB does not accept My Best Scores from TOEFL. You will need to submit individual test date score reports to your application.

We will only accept English proficiency scores that have been taken within a two (2) year period from the date that the application was submitted. Scores that exceed this time frame are considered expired and will not be accepted.

Applicants must contact the testing agency to have the official scores sent to the UAB Graduate School. TOEFL scores should be submitted to institution code 1856; Students do not need to send an official IELTS code and these scores are verified using the TRF code on the score report. PTEA results can be sent electronically to UAB through the testing website.
