San José State University (San Jose State or SJSU) is a public university in San Jose, California. Established in 1857, SJSU is the oldest public university on the West Coast and the founding campus of the California State University (CSU) system. The university, alongside the University of California, Los Angeles has academic origins in the historic normal school known as the California State Normal School. Located in downtown San Jose, the SJSU main campus is situated on 154 acres (62 ha), or roughly 19 square blocks. As of spring 2023, SJSU offers 150 bachelor's degree programs, 95 master's degrees, 5 doctoral degrees, 11 different credential programs, and 42 certificates. SJSU is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission.

The BS degree is a regimented degree plan for students who wish to develop a focused set of skills in research focused scientific and methodological training. The BS degree program, offered by the Department of Psychology, has more course requirements than the BA (i.e., fewer electives). Students should seek early and frequent advice from departmental advisors.

A carefully prepared multi-year program of study will ensure an appropriate sequencing of required courses (e.g., BIOL 21 or BIOL 65 is a prerequisite for PSYC 30, STAT 95 is a prerequisite for PSYC 100W, PSYC 100W is a prerequisite for PSYC 120, PSYC 120 is a prerequisite for PSYC 121A-PSYC 121E, and PSYC 120 is also a pre- or co-prerequisite for PSYC 190/PSYC 195). Use the advisor’s expertise for GE, SJSU Studies, and American Institutions course selection and to ensure a strong foundation for future coursework. Seeking advising is especially important for those in the honors program or those planning to go on to research-oriented graduate programs in psychology. The two and four-year planners give additional guidance in designing a particular program of study including suggestions about the order in which to take classes even if they are not governed by official prerequisite requirements. There are no minimum grade requirements for coursework in the major other than a C- or better for the lower division statistics requirement and an overall 2.0 average across the courses in the major (i.e., a D- can “count” towards meeting psychology requirements even if it does not count towards General Education requirements).

Undergraduate students are accepted each semester, except for limited access and selective access programs. Deadlines for applications and supporting documents may be found online. To be considered for admission, applicants must submit all required documents by the posted deadline.

Getting credentials and transcripts evaluated takes a considerable amount of time. In addition, sending or receiving official application materials can often take a very long time. Therefore, applicants should complete their applications as far ahead of the deadline as possible.

  • Application Forms: International students must complete and submit an application for admission.
  • Application Fee: The application fee is $30. The application fee must be in U.S. currency only (check or money order) drawn from a U.S. bank.
  • Academic Records and Credentials Evaluation: UNF will accept select international transcripts without a foreign evaluation as outlined below. All other international transcripts will require a course-by-course evaluation (post-secondary) or a document-by-document and GPA calculation evaluation (high school) by an approved third-party credential evaluation agency as outlined by the Florida Department of Education or NACES (National Association of Credential Evaluation Services).
    • UNF does not require foreign high school evaluations. You will need to submit a copy of your high school transcript for evaluation by UNF. If your high school transcript is not in English, please have it translated to English by a translation service first. You will then need to provide a copy of the original transcript and the translated version.
    • UNF will accept international post-secondary coursework without a foreign evaluation for programs within the UNF colleges that have articulated agreements on record.
    • UNF will accept international post-secondary coursework without a foreign evaluation on transcripts that are written in English from institutions accredited by an acceptable institutional accreditor, provided that a clearly defined grading scale and credit-hour conversion is notated on the official transcript.
    • All other international post-secondary transcripts will require a Florida Department of Education or NACES approved credential evaluation agency.
  • CLT, SAT and ACT Test Scores: All lower-level transfer and freshman applicants must submit official test scores from the SAT Reasoning Test, Redesigned SAT, Classing Learning Test (CLT), or the ACT (American College Test).
  • English Proficiency: All applicants, except those from countries where English is the only official language, are required to furnish satisfactory evidence of English competency. Most applicants to the University take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). However, there are other proofs of English competency that may be used. In addition to meeting the academic requirements for admission, students planning to attend UNF on an international student visa (F-1) or an exchange student visa (J-1) must also satisfy immigration, health, and financial requirements as described in the All Students section of this catalog.
