Bachelor of Health Information Management

Combine the clinical and business sides of healthcare and use data to make a difference to the quality of patient care with La Trobe's Bachelor of Health Information Management.

Develop a comprehensive skillset covering areas like anatomy and physiology, health classification, data analytics, health informatics and health systems management. Build foundations in your first year, then deepen your expertise throughout your degree, including 55 days of supervised professional placement with our prestigious health partners.

By studying La Trobe's Bachelor of Health Information Management, you will:

  • learn the language of medicine, understanding the fundamental structures of human anatomy and physiology and how they function.
  • develop skills in health informatics and data analysis, including how to implement and manage health information systems – such as security, access and integration requirements – and how to analyse, interpret and disseminate complex health data
  • build knowledge in health classification and the coding of complex clinical data so it can be used to inform and evaluate health services
  • investigate the ethical challenges and legal requirements of working with health data, including ways to ensure patients can control their health information.
  • graduate ready to apply for membership of the Health Information Management Association of Australia (HIMAA).

*Please be aware that this course includes mandatory in-person placement requirements. Students are expected to complete these placements in Australia.

Subject prerequisites

Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in English other than EAL.

English language requirement

6.5 IELTS (Academic) with no individual band less than 6.0.

Credit for previous study (advanced standing)

Credit for previous study (advanced standing) is the recognition of prior study or learning that can be counted towards a qualification. This can reduce the number of subjects required to complete your course. The amount of credit received depends on the level and relevance of your previous study and the number of subjects completed.

The University will designate courses where there is only admission into Year 1 of the course. In these cases, there is limited credit. See list of limited entry courses.
