High Point University is a private university in High Point, North Carolina. It is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The university was founded as High Point College in 1924, and it became High Point University in 1991. HPU offers 63 undergraduate majors, 65 undergraduate minors, and 18 graduate majors.

Master of Science in Biomedical Science

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) accredited Master’s of Biomedical Sciences program, has been designed to benefit students who want to: 1.) demonstrate increased academic maturity, along with, strengthening clinical and/or research skills ahead of pursuing an advanced degree in healthcare (MD, PA, DDM, PT, AT, etc.) and/or 2.) advance in a career as a research scientist via a terminal or gateway degree program designed to foster skill development in areas such as methodology, critical thinking, scientific inquiry, collaborative teamwork, and the interpretation and evaluation of scientific literature.

Curriculum:

Biomedical science provides a holistic vision of human science, underpinned by relevant basic sciences including anatomy and physiology, cell biology, biochemistry, microbiology, genetics and molecular biology, and statistics that are taught from an interdisciplinary viewpoint.  Through our innovative curriculum, HPU students navigate an increasingly collaborative and integrated science environment to ultimately address the changing needs in scientific discovery, research, and patient-centered care.

The master’s degree in biomedical sciences can be completed in 11 months through three terms (summer, fall, spring terms, with a May graduation). Courses will be offered in a cohort model totaling 39 credits-34 credits in core courses and 5 credits of elective which are determined by tracks.

International candidates who seek admission as graduate students must follow the application guidelines for the program to which they are applying. For all work completed in a college or university outside the United States, a detailed credential evaluation (showing English translation of courses, grades, GPA, degree equivalency, and more) must be sent directly to the Norcross Graduate School from a recognized, credentialed evaluation service. To be granted unconditional admittance, all graduate level international students must demonstrate advanced proficiency in English.

International applicants are required to submit the following documents, in addition to the other required application materials, listed below:

  • International Graduate Student Profile Form
  • Certificate of Financial Support
  • Graduate Visa Clearance
  • Certificate of Financial Support: All international applicants must provide proof of sufficient resources to cover educational and living expenses during their pursuit of the degree.  A Certificate of Financial Support, outlining financial support available and verification of the support, must accompany the application for admission;
  • Credential Evaluation (if applicable): Prospective graduate Business, Communication, and Education students who have studied outside of the United States must provide an official course-by-course external credential evaluation as a required part of the admission process.  Applications are considered incomplete without an official credential evaluation. This report should be sealed (or electronically secure), unopened and sent directly to Graduate Admissions One University Parkway, High Point, NC 27268. The evaluator or evaluating service must be NACES accredited.Any relevant official transcripts and other required credentials (e.g., diplomas and marksheets) will be required if admitted, and stated on the admission letter.  Those official documents must be submitted prior to matriculation. All external credential evaluations should be no older than two years at the time of application.Prospective international students interested in graduate, professional health sciences programs should refer to the individual programs for instructions.

Proficiency in English

 International students who are non-native speakers of English and have not received a degree from a college or university in the United States are required to have their official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores submitted by the testing organization in order to be considered for admission to the University. (For the TOEFL, use code 5293). The minimum TOEFL internet-based score is 79 (paper version score minimum 550). The minimum IELTS score is 6.5. TOEFL and IELTS scores must be no more than two years old. Individual graduate programs may set higher minimum TOEFL/IELTS scores and require an additional exam and/or interview in order to determine English proficiency.

Graduate programs may offer conditional admission to students who do not demonstrate advanced English language skills. Contingent upon review of the candidate’s English language proficiency, candidates may be required to complete additional English language training prior to enrolling in graduate courses.

Immigration Information

High Point University will issue the form I-20 only after the student is officially accepted and only after a nonrefundable matriculation deposit has been received.  Under no circumstance should a student enter the United States with the intent to register at High Point University unless both a current I-20 and a current student visa are in hand.

International students are required to maintain full-time status.
