The mission of the Department of Computer Science is to provide a source of knowledge to students in preparation for work in the computing field or for entry into graduate programs in computing and related disciplines. The department provides classroom, laboratory, and discovery experiences which emphasize theory, application, and contemporary research in the computing sciences. Graduates of the department are supported by a liberal arts education and are prepared to be productive members of society.
Computer Science Program Overview:
The Computer Science Program at MSU prepares students for exciting career opportunities in computing. Computer science majors complete a curriculum which is based on fundamental concepts in computing. Such a curriculum enables our graduates to obtain financially rewarding positions in todays job market and easily adapt to the changing requirements of tomorrows computing industry.
Requires 54 semester hours in computer science, 23-35 hours of mathematics (including Calculus I and II, and one upper-level elective), and 8 hours of physics.
The undergraduate program in Computer Science offers a core curriculum in computing that meets standards of computing-industry employers while allowing students to tailor the selection of advanced courses to fit their interests.
Undergraduate students may elect to take courses from exciting fields such as artificial intelligence, graphics, parallel computing, networking and game development. The baccalaureate program also features a developing emphasis in undergraduate research. The highly student-oriented faculty are committed to the success of their students and encourage participation in the program and in university activities. The members of the faculty practice an open door policy, allowing students frequent opportunities for one-on-one interactions.
Students may pursue a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) in Computer Science. To compare the BA and BS degree plans visit the degree plans page.
