New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) is a public research university in Newark, New Jersey, with a graduate-degree-granting satellite campus in Jersey City. Founded in 1881 with the support of local industrialists and inventors especially Edward Weston, NJIT opened as Newark Technical School (NTS) in 1885 with 88 students. As of fall 2022 the university enrolls 12,332 students from 92 countries, about 2,500 of whom live on its main campus in Newark's University Heights district.

Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering

Program Objectives: 

Our mission is to prepare you to enter the workforce as a skilled and experienced engineer who is ready on day one to jump onto complex projects in research labs and companies with your own ideas and strategies. We expect that, as a student or graduate of the Chemical Engineering B.S. program, you will exhibit the following in these areas:

  • Engineering Practice: Graduates of our program are successfully engaged in the practice of chemical engineering within industry, academe, and government working in a wide array of technical specialties including but not limited to process and plant design operations.
  • Professional Growth:  Graduates of our program advance their skills through professional growth and development activities such as graduate study in engineering or complementary disciplines, and continuing education; some graduates will transition into other professional fields such as business, law, and medicine through further education.
  • Service: Graduates of our program perform service to society and the engineering profession through participation in professional societies, government, civic organizations, and humanitarian endeavors.

Learning Outcomes: 

In the Chemical Engineering program, you will gain a foundational and practical understanding of engineering principles and design, while also learning to apply skills from many disciplines toward solving real-world problems.  To that end, we will encourage you to seek out experiences and mentors on- and off-campus to advance your knowledge of the field by learning at the sides of professional engineers. We view this as critical to jumpstarting your careers.

We specifically aim for our students to meet the following learning outcomes:

  • An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
  • An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
  • An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
  • An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
  • An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
  • An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.
  • An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.

  • Completed at least 15 semester hours, including:
    • English composition
    • Mathematics (pre-calculus is required for most majors)
    • Science (chemistry and/or physics required for some majors)

It is recommended that international students begin the application process six months prior to the start of the semester to allow sufficient time for processing international credentials and applying for a student visa.

There are also final cutoff dates for each semester, by which all the application requirements must be completed:

Undergraduate International Applicants
