Northern Arizona University is a public research university based in Flagstaff, Arizona. Founded in 1899, it was the final university established in the Arizona Territory. NAU is one of the three universities governed by the Arizona Board of Regents and accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

Master of Science in Statistics

  • Graduates will demonstrate breadth and depth of knowledge of statistics at the graduate level.
    • Graduates will understand a wide range of statistical theory, especially Probability, Mathematical Statistics, and Linear Models, which are central to advanced studies in statistics. This foundation provides the primary mathematical framework for understanding and applying advanced statistical methods.
    • Graduates will understand and be able to apply advanced statistical models and inference methods and how they relate to the core statistical theory.
    • Graduates will demonstrate mastery by successfully completing a comprehensive oral exam covering an approved set of three courses encompassing topics in both theoretical and applied statistics. This exam is administered by a committee of the faculty with expertise in these courses from the Department of Mathematics & Statistics.
  • Graduates will demonstrate statistical reasoning skills at the graduate level.
    • Graduates will be able to select data collection methodologies based on relevant scientific questions and practicality constraints.
    • Graduates will be able to choose and implement analysis methods based on the constraints of a study design and the scientific questions of interest.
    • Graduates will be able to assess statistical significance of aspects of a proposed model and interpret  the results in the situational context.
    • Graduates will have the theoretical and applied knowledge to understand and critique new statistical methodology and its relevance to a particular study or scientific problem.
    • Graduates will possess the creativity and intuition to apply known statistical methodology in new situations.
  • Graduates will communicate statistics effectively in preparation for careers in industry, with government agencies, or in education.
    • By both written and oral means, graduates will be able to explain statistical methodology, assumptions, and results.
    • Graduates will be proficient in the use of numerical, graphical, and narrative methods for conveying statistical information.
    • By tailoring the level of complexity and detail to the audience, graduates will be able to communicate effectively with statisticians, non--statistician researchers, and the community at large.

Master of Science in Statistics

With this degree, you will be trained in both the theory and application of statistics in a specific mathematics related area of your choice. Examples of these areas could be in:

  • actuarial science
  • applied mathematics
  • applied statistics
  • environmental science
  • forestry

Applicants must have earned a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 out of a 4.0 scale for their bachelor’s degree to be considered for regular admission. Admitted students are expected to have undergraduate educational experiences, including general education studies, that are similar to those required for a baccalaureate at Northern Arizona University.

Applicants who have earned their degree(s) from an international institution must submit official transcripts directly from the university or college. The transcripts must be in the original language of the country accompanied by an English translation. If the degree awarded and the date of award is not on the transcripts, applicants must also include a separate degree certificate document.

The privileges and responsibilities of a foreign national in the United States of America depend on the type of visa held. Therefore, is important to ensure that international graduate students obtain the appropriate visa.

Obtaining an F-1 or J-1 Visa

To obtain a visa, you should present to the nearest United States Consulate in your country the following items:

  • A Form I-20 (F-1) or a Form DS-2019 (J-1) issued by Northern Arizona University and your admission letter;
  • A valid passport;
  • Receipt of the SEVIS fee Form I-901 payment; AND
  • Proof of financial support, as stated on the Certificate of Eligibility.

It is not advisable to enter the United States on a visitor’s visa and then later request to change this to a student visa. Please note that these requests are usually denied.

Students under H-1B visa status

Prospective students under a H-1B visa are required to provide a copy of their current H-1B visa and official documentation from their employer verifying the academic studies are incidental to their employment. The Office of Graduate & Professional Studies will request this information and provide instructions upon receipt of the student’s application.

Priority-  If a priority deadline has been specified, it is highly recommended that you submit your application on or before this date. Students that meet this deadline may be given special consideration for things such as assistantships, scholarships, fellowships, etc., if available.
Rolling admission- no specific deadline has been identified. Students can apply for admission up until the start of any given term or session.
Space available basis- applications will be accepted and considered if space is available in the program.
Final- applications will not be accepted past this date.
