Bachelor of Science in Psychology
Do you find yourself curious about how the brain works? Do you often wonder why people think and behave the way they do? The University of Central Missouri’s Psychology Bachelor of Science program teaches you the skills to uncover those very answers — and apply them to our dynamic world.
At UCM, we provide Psychology BS students a personalized educational experience that blends psychological theory with hands-on practice in high-tech laboratories to gain real-world research experience. This gives you a strong foundation in the key areas of psychological science through a curriculum that meets the high standards and goals set by the American Psychological Association.
How to choose between the Psychology BS and BA degrees
If you’re interested in pursuing a Psychology MS degree or Ph.D., the Psychology BS program is best for you. The Bachelor of Science in Psychology focuses heavily on research and laboratory experience and teaches you how to use the scientific method to answer questions about human behavior and interactions.
Choose the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology if you want to apply the knowledge and skills you learn in your psychology courses to a career path not heavily anchored in the field itself.
What you will study
All students in the Psychology BS degree program take core courses that provide a solid foundation about the field of psychology and its history. Both BS and BA students take these foundational courses, which include:
- Abnormal Psychology
- Cognitive Psychology
- General Psychology
- Life-Span Development
- Social Psychology
- Theories of Personality
As a Psychology Bachelor of Science student, dive deep into research by developing and conducting your own studies. In particular, you’ll spend a significant amount of time in hands-on labs learning about how the scientific method applies to the field.
Other topics covered in Psychology BS courses include legal and ethical behavior in research settings, scientific reasoning and problem solving. You’ll even gain an understanding of the brain’s structure and function through activities such as sheep brain dissection.
Psychology BS program students take nine hours of upper-level electives, as well as advanced courses such as:
- Research Design and Analysis I
- Research Design and Analysis II
- Physiological Psychology
