Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering

The computer engineering program at the University of Central Oklahoma is a new program that was introduced in fall 2021. It is jointly managed by the School of Engineering and the Department of Computer Science.

Computer engineering combines elements of electrical engineering and computer engineering. Computer engineers focus on the design and development of computer hardware and software. Their work extends from working with small microprocessors to large supercomputers. Computer engineers are employed in nearly all of today’s industries, but particularly in high-tech firms that rely on microprocessor controllers. Students majoring in computer engineering at UCO can focus on one of three areas of concentration: cybersecurity engineering, the internet of things and control systems.

Following the accreditation guidelines of the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, the computer engineering program will be submitted for its initial accreditation one year after it produces its first graduate. The program, courses and students are currently being monitored and assessed using the same procedures that are currently in place for UCO’s six other ABET-accredited engineering and computer science programs.

The Bachelor of Science degree program in computer engineering is an interdisciplinary program that uniquely blends the design and development of both computer hardware and software to prepare students for careers in the fast-growing field of computer engineering. Dedicated faculty members guide student learning through small classes, hands-on experiences using modern equipment, excellent laboratory facilities and opportunities to participate in undergraduate research. Students in computer engineering are able to specialize in one of three career-specific tracks: computer control systems; cybersecurity engineering; or, the internet of things (IoT).

Students in computer engineering primarily work directly as engineers in the industry, while some choose to attend graduate school in computer engineering.

International Freshmen

A freshman is a student who has never studied at another college or university. Most freshmen enter UCO immediately after completing high school; however, freshmen can be any age as long as they have never attended another college or university.

Admission Requirements

Admission to UCO is based on the completion of a rigorous secondary school curriculum demonstrated by a recognized certificate of completion that would qualify you for entrance into a university in your country. There are two methods for freshman admissions:

Option 1: Admission Based on Grades From High School

For this option, the SAT or ACT is NOT required for admission.
This option is for students who have already graduated, or will soon graduate, from an accredited high school. The student must show a minimum GPA of 2.70 or its equivalent in high school.

Note: Students who are admitted through the high school grades or GPA and do not meet the SAT/ACT test requirement will be required to take the Computerized Placement Test (CPT) prior to enrollment into classes.

Option 2: Admission Based on SAT or ACT Results

This option is best for students who want admission before completing high school or do not meet the admissions requirements in option one. If you have taken the SAT or ACT, you may apply during your final year of high school. To be considered for admission, you must obtain:

  • SAT: 1030 or higher combined critical reading and mathematics score
  • ACT: 20 or higher composite score

Certain applicants may be required to provide SAT or ACT as admissions criteria.

Admission Documents

Proof of English Proficiency - Undergraduate

Submit one of the following to satisfy the requirement:

  • TOEFL - 61 IBT (Internet-based test) or 500 PBT (paper-based test);
  • IELTS - 5.5 overall band;
  • PTE Academic - 44;
  • iTEP Academic - 3.5; or,
  • Proof of 12 weeks of intensive English study at an approved ESL program in the U.S. after achieving a minimum TOEFL score of 460 (PBT) or 48 (IBT) or minimum IELTS overall band of 5.0 or or PTE Academic of 36 or iTEP of 3.0.

Note: Refer to UCO Office of Global Affairs for a list of approved ESL programs in the U.S.

or to find out about an ESL program on UCO's campus.
