Bachelor of Science in Statistics

Mathematics focuses on the analysis of quantities, magnitudes, forms, and their relationships, using symbolic logic and language. Includes instruction in algebra, calculus, functional analysis, geometry, number theory, logic, topology and other mathematical specializations. Programs include instruction in calculus, linear algebra, numerical analysis and partial differential equations, discrete mathematics, probability theory, statistics, computing, and more.

Studying Mathematics at the University of Cincinnati prepare students for a wide variety of careers in fields such as statistical analysis for banks, insurance companies, and medical research, financial analysis, and K12 or higher education. The undergraduate Program in the Department of Mathematical Sciences comprises two majors: Statistics/Actuarial Science and Mathematics. In these majors students may pursue a BA or BS degree, with the BA degree emphasizing core math concepts and the BS being more focused on scientific disciplines. At the graduate level, UC offers a master’s and doctoral PhD program in Mathematics or Statistics, with these programs providing opportunities for graduate studies in a number of specialized fields of mathematics and statistics, notably Geometric Analysis, PDEs, Mathematical Biology, Cryptography, Probability and Applied Statistics. UC also offers an MAT degree, for licensed teachers of secondary mathematics.

The University of Cincinnati offers undergraduate and graduate program options, including the MS, MAT & PhD. Student research opportunities begin at the undergraduate level with the opportunity to work with a faculty member as part of their capstone experience; and continue through to the MS and PhD levels, where extended research projects frequently lead to journal publication and international trips to study at workshops or to present results at conferences.

Statistics is one of the fastest-growing disciplines and is ranked among the top six professions by the US News and World Report. Statistician jobs are projected to grow 35 percent between 2020 and 2030, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Statistics is used in almost all disciplines, including science, medicine, business, finance, social science, banking, and sports. A career in statistics will offer excellent job satisfaction, stability, career development, and life-long learning opportunities in a field of one’s interest. Statisticians are in significant demand in almost all employment sectors in private, government, and academia: providing a wide range of job opportunities of interest to build a career. Even in economic downturns, employment  in statistics-related position remains in high demand.

Statistics is about solving real-world problems using data. It involves using data and analytical tools to make estimates and forecasts, assess their accuracy, and help in decision making. Students will learn data collection; data summarization and visualization; modeling for various types of data; making inferences and predictions; quantifying uncertainty; and facilitating decision-making.

The Division of Statistics and Data Sciences in the Department of Mathematical Sciences offers cutting-edge courses and training in statistics and data science that will prepare students for lucrative employments in Cincinnati and across the nation.

School Transcript Requirements

All first-year applicants are expected to complete college preparatory education curriculum, earning a graduation certificate or diploma that would enable you to apply to university in your home country. Examples include your High School Diploma, IB Diploma, General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Levels (A-Levels), General Secondary Education Certificate, Indian Standard XII Higher Secondary School Certificate, or West African Senior School Certificate.

First-year students applying to UC typically complete a curriculum comprised of the following subjects:

  • Mathematics (4 years)
  • Science, including Chemistry and/or Physics (3-4 years)
  • Language/History/Social sciences and other electives (3-4 years)

What to send our office:

  • Currently enrolled classes and grades (if possible)
  • Previous 2-3 years of classes and grades (depending on country)
  • A-Level or IB advanced credit (if enrolled or completed
Transcripts must be English. If not, each document must include certified English translation.

The person that writes the recommendation should be a school guidance counselor, teacher, coach, or job/volunteer supervisor. Parents and other family members are not permitted to write a student's letter.

How to Send Letter of Recommendation

There are two options for sending a letter of recommendation:

  1. Within the Common App add the person's name and email address. When the application is submitted that person will receive an email request to upload the letter of recommendation. The document will be attached to the student application.
  2. Have the person that wrote the letter of recommendation email the document to international.admissions@uc.edu or the UC International Admissions Counselor email address.
