Application Checklist
- Completed Undergraduate Application: UofL's Take Flight Application or the Common App. All international applicants must specify an intended major and program on their application.
- $30 non-refundable application fee (U.S. dollars)
- Academic records from all the secondary schools, universities, colleges or professional schools attended
- Proof of English proficiency
- Meet the First-time Freshman or Transfer Student requirements
Academic Records
- Transcripts must be official and submitted from all high school/post-secondary schools attended.
- Transcripts issued by schools outside the United States require notarized, ATA-certified translation.
- All academic credentials should be sent to adetran@louisville.edu or mailed directly to the Office of Admissions at Office of Admissions, Dept. AO, University of Louisville, Louisville, KY 40292 USA

English Proficiency
All applicants for whom English is a second language need to show evidence of sufficient proficiency in the English language. If you are submitting test scores, please note that the scores must be official and come to UofL Admissions Office directly from the testing service. Applicants may demonstrate English proficiency by submitting the following materials:
- TOEFL (internet-based test): 79 or higher
- TOEFL (paper-based test): 550 or higher
- TOEFL Essentials: 8.5 and above
- IELTS: 6.5 or higher overall score from the academic module exam
- Duolingo: 105 or higher
- SAT: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score of 490 or higher (SAT taken March 2016 or later)
- ACT: English sub-score of 18 or higher
- AP: English Language and Composition score of 4 or higher
- IB: 5 or higher on the English Language and Literature exam

Students may also demonstrate English proficiency by:
- completing two consecutive years of full-time high school in the U.S or any high school where English is primary language of instruction, with a grade of C or higher in English. This exemption is granted only based on official transcripts.
- completing two consecutive years of full-time university/college in the U.S. or university/college where English is the primary language of instruction, with a grade of C or higher in English 101 or 102. This exemption is granted only based on official transcripts.
Notification of Admission Decision
The Office of Admissions will review your application and notify you of their admissions decision. Please do not make arrangements for your Visa interview or travel to the U.S. until you receive a written offer or admission from UofL and your Form I-20 or Form DS-2019 document.
Visa Process
After you meet the admissions requirements, International Center will contact you for additional materials to issue your Form I-20 (for students seeking F-1 visa) or Form DS-2019 (for students seeking J-1 visa). Please do not send the materials to the Admissions Office; only send the materials to the International Center after you are being contacted.
You will need to submit
- a copy of your passport
- Financial Statement
- Additional materials for transfer students:
- A copy of your current Form I-20 or Form DS-2019
- I-94 record
Financial Statement
You will be asked to demonstrate that you have adequate financial resources to support your educational and living expenses for the duration of your studies in the U.S. Please refer to this page for the International Cost of Attendance.
- If you are submitting proof of personal funds, please attach an original dated official bank letter verifying that you or your family has the total necessary funds on deposit.
- For government, agency or employer financial support, please provide an original letter from the sponsor stating the amount and duration of the scholarship and validity for attendance at the University of Louisville.
- If you will have a U.S. sponsor, they should complete the Affidavit of Support I-134 form and provide the necessary documents.
